Local Biodiversity Action Plans

The 1994 Biodiversity Action Plan recognised that biodiversity is ultimately lost or conserved at a local level and that conserving and enhancing biodiversity would require working in partnership.

Around 160 Local Action Plans are in preparation or being implemented across Great Britain. Each Action Plan works on the basis of partnerships to identify local priorities and to determine the contribution they can make to the delivery of the national Species and Habitat Action Plan targets.

Somerset was one of the first counties to develop district level plans, at a time when little guidance was available. Having district level plans is a different approach to many other counties. There are seven Local Biodiversity Action Plans (LBAPs) that exist within Somerset.
